Moving Company Estimates
Moving company estimates are not that cut and dried
as there are many factors to consider.
|
For example,
if you have a piano or pool table, this will require
special care. You can opt to have the moving company
pack your household which of course would cost more
than if you do the packing yourself. And, of course,
if you will need to store your household in between
moves there is a cost associated with that as
well.

Moving company estimates differ for local and long
distance moves. If you are moving long distance, the
charge is typically calculated by the weight of the
items moved and the distance you are moving. As you
can see, giving an estimate just by looking at your
items can be tricky but most movers are professionals
with years of experience and can get you in the
general ball park.
In order to get more accurate moving company
estimates, make sure you tell the mover about
everything you are having moved so he can calculate
accurately. If you have items that require special
care or need special services (like packing) then let
them know up front. It is probably a good idea to get
estimates from several movers.
Make sure you know what kind of moving company
estimates you are getting. A Non Binding
estimate is basically just a best guess. It may
actually end up costing more or less depending on the
final weight of your household. A Binding
estimate is binding and you will be expected to pay
that amount whether your goods weigh more or less.
You can also get a Not to Exceed or
Guaranteed Price estimate which guarentees that
you will pay the binding price or a lower if your
items weight less than estimated - you will never pay
more than the binding price. When you are comparing
estimates from different movers, it is best to compare
the same type of estimate.
When getting your moving company estimates, make
sure you discuss how the mover will be paid. Many
movers do not take personal checks so you best be
aware of the type of payment you will have to hand
over and when this payment is expected - no one wants
to have to run out to the bank to get cash for the
movers in the middle of moving day!
